Sigma Featured Staff Member Of The Week
Amber is one of our coaches at our Sigma Cleburne location. Today we interviewed her focusing on coaching, life lessons and hobbies.
Q: How and why did you get involved in the sport of swimming?
A: I got interested in swimming/coaching for my kids over 6 years ago. I loved the water as a kid and teenager and we are a homeschool family who needed a PE. My kids were interested, and a swim lesson instructor was needed, and it all worked out.
Q: Who do you think are one or more of the greatest swimmers ever and why?
A: My favorite swimmer is Missy, The Missile, Franklin because her perspective on life is very positive.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your swimmers and coaching?
A: I enjoy kids and teaching, if I can teach a kid to overcome their fear of water, and how to float and swim, that brings me great joy. Teaching a child how to swim is priceless.
Q: What do you hope your swimmers can learn from you?
A: I always want my swimmers to do and give me their best. I strive to always give them my best, and to see a child go from terrified of the water to I don't want to get out is an awesome feeling.
Q: How do you help a new swimmer overcome the fear of submerging their face into the water?
A: To help my swimmers overcome their fear of the water takes a lot of patience, persistence, positive reinforcement, and games. A game favorite for my groups are dolphins and whales and singing like mermaids under the water.
Q: How to you keep your swimmers motivated to learn new skills?
A: I keep my swimmers motivated by a lot of positive encouragement and we always try to have a little fun too, breaking down that stoke or technique until they get it.
Q: Do you have a favorite stroke that you teach and why?
A: My favorite stroke to teach is freestyle. To see the smile on their face when they finally get roll-breathing and reaching long with a correct kick is the best feeling in the world.
Q: Are there any life lessons that you have learned as a swimmer and/or as a coach?
A: Life lessons learned from coaching is being joyful, persistent, patient, positive, and kind is key to go through any situation.
Q: What other sports or hobbies do you enjoy outside of swimming?
A: I have many hobbies and enjoy other sports too. I am a volunteer in 4-H, Cub scouts, Boy scouts, and Venture Crew. I love camping and cooking outside, and hiking. I am also a Range Master for Cub scout BB shooting events. I love to sing, play piano, volleyball, softball, and football.
Q: If you weren’t a coach, what do you think you’d be doing right now?
A: If I wasn't a swim coach I would not be a Merit Badge counselor for swim in Boy scouts, but I would still be a volunteer with Scouts B.S.A. and 4-H.
