Sigma Featured Staff Member Of The Week

Carter is one of our coaches at Sigma Burleson THR location. Today we interviewed him focusing on coaching and motivation.

Q: How and why did you become involved in the sport swimming?

A: My best friend grew up swimming and so that is how I was introduced to it.

Q: What do you hope your swimmers will learn from you?

A: I hope that my swimmers will learn that hard work and effort really pays off.

Q: What does coaching the sport of swimming mean to you?

A: Coaching swim to me means the world because I grew up and swam with some of the best coaches. They were able to mold me into the man I am today, and I hope to take what they did for me and do that for my swimmers.

Q: How did you stay motivated in the sport growing up, and how do you keep your swimmers motivated?

A: I am a very competitive person, so I was always staying motivated through competition and meets. I like to change things up at practice and really challenge my swimmers to keep them motivated while swimming.

Q: What is your favorite thing about coaching the sport and your favorite thing about your swimmers?

A: My favorite thing about coaching is witnessing my kids get better than I was at their age. I have some of the most dedicated kids and it is great for me to see them push themselves at such a young age. My favorite thing about my swimmers is that they are way funnier than I am, so it keeps practices entertaining.

Q: Who do you think are one or more of the greatest swimmers ever and why?

A: I do not really know any big-name swimmers, but I have had the privilege of getting to know some of the greatest swimmers at the high school level and beyond.

Q: What do you tell a young child that is afraid of the water at his/her first swim lesson and how do you try to make it less scary for them?

A: I have had two-year old’s all the way to 12-year old’s that have been scared of the water. I try and make as much of a comfortable environment even if that means not getting in the water on the first day. Taking it one step at a time.

Q: How do you prepare a swimmer for his/her first USA swim meet?

A: I make sure that my kids know that meets are used to measure progress and that no matter how fast or slow they think they go, progress is progress.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being around your swimmers and the atmosphere of Sigma?

A: My favorite thing about the atmosphere of Sigma are the swimmers and how all my kids are different. All my kids have different personalities, but all love to come and swim.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not coaching?

A: I love to read, do homework, and watch movies in my free time!
