Sigma Featured Staff Member Of The Week

Sarah is one of our coaches at the Sigma Swim Fort Worth East (TWU) location. Today we interviewed her focusing on coaching and motivation.

Q: How and why did you become involved in the sport swimming?

A: My oldest brother swam and I wanted to be like him, so I took lessons and joined a team when I was six!!

Q: What do you hope your swimmers will learn from you?

A: That there’s nothing to fear in the water, and to be confident in themselves

Q: What does coaching the sport of swimming mean to you?

A: Helping people overcome their fears of the water and being able to gain confidence in themselves and in the water

Q: How did you stay motivated in the sport growing up, and how do you keep your swimmers motivated?

A: I remind them that there’s nothing to fear in the water and to take their time, learning takes time and to not expect perfection the first time.

Q: What is your favorite thing about coaching the sport and your favorite thing about your swimmers?

A: Seeing my swimmers get comfortable in the water and watching their confidence grow!!

Q: Who do you think are one or more of the greatest swimmers ever and why?

A: Michael Phelps, I think that could be a cheesy answer, but I say that because he changed how the world saw swimming and raised popularity of the sport. Before him there were great swimmers, but I think he was so infamous that people gained a higher respect for swimming

Q: What do you tell a young child that is afraid of the water at his/her first swim lesson and how do you try to make it less scary for them?

A: Most of the time I hold them as they get into the water and help them slowly acclimate and show them there’s nothing to be scared of; it all about baby steps.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being around your swimmers and the atmosphere of Sigma?

A: People love the sport and push themselves and their teammates to be their best!!

Q: What do you like to do when you are not coaching?

A: When I have time, working out or being with my friends.
