Sigma Featured Swimmer Of The Week
Cade is a 14-year old swimmer that swims at our Sigma Swim Duncanville location under coach Bekah. He attends Waxahachie High School and swims for his high school team.
Q: When and why did you decide to become a swimmer?
A: I decided to become a swimmer when I was in the second grade. The Dumas ISD had a program where they taught every second grader in the school system how to swim. One of the instructors for the programs asked me to join the YMCA team and that is where my journey started.
Q: Are there any athletes or swimmers that inspire you most and why?
A: I was most inspired by Levi David. Levi was a swimmer for Waxahachie High School and was the 50 Freestyle State Champion in 2017. Levi was on the Waxahachie YMCA team with me when I was 9 years old and we swam team together for several years. In 2017 he helped coach the Waxahachie YMCA swim team. Even though he was much older than me, he was always nice to me, encouraged me to work hard and do my best.
Q: Do you have any favorite events that you like to swim at meets?
A: My favorite event is the 100 Backstroke.
Q: What do you do when you are standing behind the start block to focus on your race?
A: I stretch a little to loosen up and I think about the mechanics and techniques of the race.
Q: Who is your biggest supporter?
A: My mom is my biggest supporter. She gives up so much of her time to make sure that I am able to swim. She tracks all of my times, videos all of my races and supports me 100%.
Q: Do you have any other family members involved in the sport of swimming:
A: No. I am the only one in my family that swims.
Q: Who motivates you the most to do your best?
A: Coach Bekah is the person who motivates me to do my best. Even when I am discouraged or overwhelmed she never gives up on me. She is always there to keep pushing me to stay positive, work hard and never give up.
Q: How do you manage school and the sport of swimming?
A: Managing school and swimming takes a lot of discipline. I do a lot of homework in the car traveling to and from swim practice trying to keep up with my assignments. Most of my weekends are spent trying to get ahead on assignments by doing as much prep work for the coming week as possible.
Q: Did you ever swim an event at meet that you did not like and how did you handle it?
A: I did not like to swim the 500 Freestyle at a swim meet. This was the hardest race I have done. I tried to stay positive and remember my training. Even though I knew I wouldn’t be the best in this event, I gave it everything I had.
Q: What are your goals for the future in swimming?
A: I know there are many areas for improvement. I want to continue learning from Coach Bekah so that I can improve both my time and technique. I want to make her proud and represent both Sigma and Waxahachie High School by always doing my best.
